Dr Helen Cooper

Dr. HJ Cooper, BSc (Hons), PhD was recently appointed at Birmingham as a recognised expert in Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. Her research focuses on the biological applications of this technique. Dr Cooper obtained her BSc (Chemistry) and PhD (Mass spectrometry) at the University of Warwick. She then managed the UK National FT-ICR facility, and in 2000 moved to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), Florida State University, as a scholar scientist in Prof Alan Marshall’s group, co-inventor of FT-ICR. In this role, Cooper was Director of the ICR User Program, was responsible for all external collaborations, and supervised postdoctoral fellows and students. Dr Cooper returned to the UK in 2003 as a Wellcome Trust Value In People Fellow at Birmingham. She was subsequently awarded a Wellcome Trust University Technology Fellowship (074131) to develop high performance mass spectrometry, and has secured funds to develop the unique facility which houses a new hybrid 7 Tesla FT-ICR mass spectrometer (Thermo Finnigan LTQ FT) with NanoMate chip-based electrospray system and on-line HPLC (supported by a full-time technician). Dr Cooper has published extensively in peer-reviewed biological mass spectrometry journals, contributed invited reviews to respected journals, and has been invited to national and international conferences.
